EDEKA Hahner:
With PricoPlex, the fresh food counter can be stocked quickly.
Edeka Hahner is traditionally the primary grocery store in Künzell, near Fulda in eastern Hesse. The family business has been operating since 1969 and is now run by the third generation. What began as a full-range supermarket started as a butcher shop. And the meat and sausage varieties are still produced by the store's own butchers according to traditional recipes. The fresh food counter is therefore the heart of the store. For the presentation of the counter products, Edeka Hahner relies on high-quality products from the tray manufacturer PricoPlex in Eresing.

EDEKA Hahner optimizes with PricoPlex
It's been over 50 years since Karl and Margarete Hahner first opened the doors of their butcher shop. The in-store butcher shop still produces more than 40 varieties of its own sausages. However, the business in and around the deli counter has grown considerably since its beginnings: the supermarketand employs 100 people, 20 of whom work at the deli counter. There, Marvin Hahner, who is responsible for the entire counter, consciously focuses on service and customer advice. "The market is changing. People are buying meat and sausage more consciously," he says. Buying only the cheapest option is no longer the trend. "That's why we need a team at the deli counter that can offer expert advice." To have more time for customer interactions, Marvin Hahner wanted to optimize the work at the counter. That's how he came across PricoPlex.
But the team also benefits from the PricoPlex equipment:
"The trays are much easier to handle. Because the three-tiered staircase displays fill the depth of the counter and also utilize the height, employees no longer have to play a complicated 'tray Tetris' game."

Efficiency at EDEKA Hahner has increased enormously
Hahner wanted to improve customer and employee guidance by redesigning the deli counter. He is convinced that the way products are presented has a significant impact on what and how much is purchased at the fresh food counter. While the basic layout of the counter—20 meters for sausage and meat, eight meters for cheese, and five meters for fish—remains the same, the interior has changed dramatically. Edeka Hahner now uses tiered displays and a color scheme that provides customers with better orientation when making their selections.
But the team also benefits from the PricoPlex system: “The trays are much easier to handle. Because the three-tiered displays fill the depth of the counter and also utilize the height, employees no longer have to play a complicated game of ‘tray Tetris.’” Before Edeka Hahner switched to PricoPlex this year, three employees spent a total of 45 minutes every Monday morning restocking the deli counter. Now, the displays and additional trays are rinsed out on Saturday after closing time and immediately put back in place. The new work week then begins more relaxed for the staff.

The shells are robust and durable
Besides the clear layout of the bowls in the counter, Marvin Hahner was also impressed by the material itself: "Unlike products from other manufacturers that I know, the PricoPlex bowls don't become dull. Their brilliance remains even after many washes." The counter outfitter from Eresing also advertises that its bowls are break-resistant and durable. Marvin Hahner wanted to know for sure: Before making his purchase decision, he put them to the test in the Edeka parking lot: The man, who is almost 1.90 meters tall, dropped several bowls from hip height, and all of them remained intact. "That was also an important factor in switching to PricoPlex."

The counter will be designed according to demand
But what about the future of the fresh food counter? "For us, the counter is and will remain the heart of the store," emphasizes Marvin Hahner. To ensure this remains the case, he continuously monitors the market: "We pay attention to trends and keep up with the times in terms of presentation." For example, allergy labeling is becoming increasingly important. Edeka Hahner therefore clearly marks gluten-free and lactose-free products. "We now have 80 percent of our assortment made up of these." Other things are changing as well. Mountains of meat in the counter deter customers

The investment in the new shells is paying off
Edeka Hahner made the decision to use the sustainable PricoPlex trays with a clear objective: "We wanted to position ourselves for the future in this market segment." The slightly higher purchase price for the high-quality trays quickly pays for itself: "Thanks to the time saved in stocking the counter, we have already recouped the higher acquisition costs within a year," Hahner calculated.
